The survey was conducted online from July to August 2022 using semi-structured interviews. The subjects were nine Japanese language instructors with experience teaching learners experiencing difficulties at university. The findings revealed that instructors comprehensively determine support measures, considering not only requested accommodations but also classroom dynamics, information gathered directly from the learner, and the impact on fellow learners. Support measures included not only individualized responses to specific learners, such as providing one-on-one guidance or modifying font design and size in teaching materials, but also inclusive approaches like adjusting the overall class structure or changing teaching materials. Factors complicating support included requests arriving just before the semester started or after it began, leaving insufficient time to plan responses, and inadequate information sharing among staff members regarding the specific student. | |

In this study, from a discourse skills perspective, analysis was conducted of how the oral abilities of Japanese learners changed following completion of an interactive Japanese language program. The research method was based on Nakai et al.’s (2004) discourse skills categories. Upon the completion of a two-week interactive program in which learners interacted with native Japanese speakers, beginner learners used a range of different skills to handle communication problems; intermediate and advanced learners used laughter and humor skills to communicate more effectively. | |
