This paper focuses on the development process of "Intermediate 1" reviewing its creation process and presenting examples of course design and survey results. It also examines how learners aiming for the CEFR B1 level perceived this approach. The analysis revealed that the themes and tasks in "Intermediate 1" were both relevant and engaging for learners, contributing to the creation of a dialogic space in the classroom and enhancing learning outcomes. By creating integrated TEM diagrams, we visualized how individuals, despite having diverse experiences and taking different paths, ultimately reached common equifinal points.
The analysis revealed that during their student years, experiences such as "learning through the curriculum" and "teaching practicum" influenced their career choices. After becoming teachers, factors such as "direct interactions with students," "collaboration with Japanese teachers," and "transitioning to a stable living environment" played key roles in sustaining their careers. Additionally, through their teaching practice, they developed a professional value of "supporting each student’s growth while growing themselves," which was closely linked to the foundational standards of teacher education.
Furthermore, by reinterpreting responses from a follow-up survey of graduates using TEA, we gained deeper insights into the implicit meanings and intentions behind seemingly simple answers. This series reflects the principles of Task-Based Language Teaching (TBLT), aiming to cultivate the critical thinking skills essential for university and other academic settings and increase the language knowledge (sentence patterns, expressions, and kanji words) necessary to complete tasks. In developing the series, CEFR-based objectives were confirmed, and themes and tasks for each level were selected carefully. The process was carried out step-by-step; after the manuscript was completed, revisions were repeatedly made within each level and throughout the series to improve the content. Throughout the development of this series, the understanding of task-based language education among JLP teachers was deepened. Specifically, it introduces the Task-Based Learning Japanese: Intermediate series, developed by the Japanese Language Program at International Christian University (ICU), and considers how educators can effectively facilitate learning experiences that align with the principles of TBLT.
