Details In this study, we examined whether the effect on deterrence against recidivism of personal attributes (attachment to parents) was affected by the attributes of the community where delinquent boys lived (complete unemployment rate and the difference from the previous year). We examined whether or not there were 6238 boys who first entered juvenile discrimination centers throughout Japan in 1991. When analyzed using the hierarchical population split survival analysis model, the main effects of attachment to parents, the unemployment rate, and the difference in the full unemployment rate from the previous year are all significant in the direction consistent with the theoretical prediction. In addition, the interaction of the two variables on parental attachment and the unemployment rate was also found to be significant.
