as debiasing. The purpose of this paper is to provide an overview of cognitive biases and a framework for debiasing proposed by Wilson and Brekke (1994). Effect of Peer Feedback on Self-assessment in Writing Language Research Bulletin 34,pp.36-46 (Single) 2019/04
|
Language | English | Publication Date | 2019/04 | Type | Research Paper (Bulletin of University/Institution) | Peer Review | With peer review | Title | Effect of Peer Feedback on Self-assessment in Writing | Contribution Type | Single Work | Journal | Language Research Bulletin | Journal Type | Japan | Publisher | ICU | Volume, Issue, Pages | 34,pp.36-46 | Total page number | 11 | Author and coauthor | *John Peloghitis | Details | This paper examines the impact that peer feedback has on helping students to assess their writing performance. Self-ratings and ratings by independent raters on five areas of writing were collected from two essays and examined in two groups of students over a year-long writing course: twenty students who assessed themselves after peer revision and twenty-three students who assessed themselves after self-revision. T-tests were conducted to determine if significant differences exist in the level of agreement between students and raters and if these differences decrease over time due to the presence of peer feedback. The data suggests that the group engaging in peer feedback made greater progress in overcoming significant gaps in agreement, particularly in overall essay score and grammar. |

Language | English | Publication Date | 2018/08 | Type | Research Paper (International Conference Proceedings) | Peer Review | With peer review | Title | Impact of writing models on accuracy, complexity, and overall performance | Contribution Type | Single Work | Journal | JALT 2017 Conference Proceedings | Journal Type | Japan | Publisher | JALT Publications | Volume, Issue, Pages | pp.319-325 | Total page number | 7 | Author and coauthor | *John Peloghitis | Details | This paper is a report on a study that investigated the effect model texts have on developing accuracy, complexity, and overall performance in essay writing. 38 lower intermediate Japanese learners of English were divided into a control group, which primarily received peer feedback, and an experimental group, which incorporated model essays and genre awareness activities into the feedback process. The study spanned 15 weeks and included 4 essays accompanied by in-class feedback sessions. Independent sample t-tests and paired sample t-tests were used to
assess the effect of the model essays on accuracy, complexity, and overall performance between pretest scores and posttest scores. Results indicate that both groups made progress but the experimental group made greater improvement in their overall writing performance. |

Examining the role of model texts in writing instruction Accents Asia 10(1),pp.17-26 (Collaboration) 2018/06

Language | English | Publication Date | 2018/06 | Type | Research Paper | Peer Review | With peer review | Title | Examining the role of model texts in writing instruction | Contribution Type | Joint Work | Journal | Accents Asia | Publisher | Accents Asia | Volume, Issue, Pages | 10(1),pp.17-26 | Total page number | 10 | Author and coauthor | *John Peloghitis and Dan Ferreira | Details | The following paper reviews the existing literature concerning the effectiveness and application of model texts in
writing. An overview of the advantages and disadvantages of how model texts are implemented˛ highlights some of the pertinent issues related to the teaching and learning practices. Lastly, although scholars have generally advocated the use of models in the literature and have been applied in empirical studies, little has been
written which specifically addresses the practical needs of teachers. Thus, this paper offers instructors several guidelines to consider when incorporating model texts into the writing process. |

Difficulties and strategies in argumentative writing: A qualitative analysis JALT 2016 Conference Proceedings pp.399-406 (Single) 2017/08
|
Language | English | Publication Date | 2017/08 | Type | Research Paper (International Conference Proceedings) | Peer Review | With peer review | Title | Difficulties and strategies in argumentative writing: A qualitative analysis | Contribution Type | Single Work | Journal | JALT 2016 Conference Proceedings | Journal Type | Japan | Publisher | JALT Publications | Volume, Issue, Pages | pp.399-406 | Total page number | 8 | Author and coauthor | *John Peloghitis | Details | The following paper reports on a small-scale qualitative study examining the problems that a group of 1st-year Japanese students perceived in writing argumentative essays at a liberal arts university. The use of writing strategies was also examined to investigate how students responded to the difficulties they faced in order to overcome them. Data was collected from seven participants in the form of individual interviews, comments from teacher-student conferences, and notes in e-portfolios. The data indicate that most participants perceived rhetorical features of English argumentative writing as the most problematic. Findings also suggest that participants primarily used cognitive, social, and search strategies to facilitate their writing, whereas metacognitive strategies were used minimally. |

Language | English | Publication Date | 2017/03 | Type | Research Paper | Peer Review | With peer review | Title | Innovative ideas to facilitate a modern approach to writing | Contribution Type | Joint Work | Journal Type | Japan | Publisher | ICU | Volume, Issue, Pages | 31,pp.16-23 | Total page number | 8 | Author and coauthor | *Dan Ferreira and John Peloghitis | Details | In the following paper, several instructional practices are introduced that enhance learning in a university-level writing course. Digital tools such as Google Docs and Google Drive are highlighted to create better feedback opportunities; ones that allow students and teachers to be more efficient and collaborative when commenting on essays. Other digital tools like Google Hangouts and e-rubrics can be used to minimize misunderstandings on what is
being evaluated, and build better rapport during teacher-student conferences. Lastly, online reflective journals are introduced to illustrate how students and teachers can participate in a community of learning and inform each other to minimize redundancy and create better learning opportunities. |
