■ Profile
I am an anthropologist specialized in religion with a focus on Catholicism. My main areas of research are South Asia and Latin America.

After working for 15 years with Catholic seminarians and migrant workers in Sri Lanka and other parts of Asia, I am currently conducting a new project on Catholic cultural heritage. The project titled "Missionary Museums in Southeast Asia and Latin America" seeks to comparatively examine Catholic museums in former colonial and mission territories to understand how local communities and converted populations reflect on their religious identity through their Catholic heritage. The project emerges against the backdrop of a recent wealth of research focused on missionary collections in Europe and questions of ownership and restitution that monopolize such projects. By looking at museum collections outside Europe, this project attempts to decenter the debate away from European concerns to address what Catholics in the Global South attempt to do with these museums and exhibitions.
