Career Choices and Professional Development of Graduates from Japanese Language Teacher Training Program in Thailand: Exploring the Influence of Their Experiences Proceedings of the Research Council on Japanese Language Teacher Training Programs at Universities (22),pp.1-18 (Collaboration) 2025/03 |
Language | Japanese | Publication Date | 2025/03 | Type | Research Paper | Peer Review | With peer review | Title | Career Choices and Professional Development of Graduates from Japanese Language Teacher Training Program in Thailand: Exploring the Influence of Their Experiences | Contribution Type | Joint Work | Journal | Proceedings of the Research Council on Japanese Language Teacher Training Programs at Universities | Publisher | Research Council on Japanese Language Teacher Training Programs at Universities | Volume, Issue, Pages | (22),pp.1-18 | Total page number | 18 | Authorship | Lead author | Author and coauthor | ◎Ai Nishino, Naomi Hatta, Yukari Tsubone | Details | This study qualitatively analyzed the career choices and professional development of graduates from Japanese language teacher training programs in Thailand using the Trajectory Equifinality Approach (TEA). By creating integrated TEM diagrams, we visualized how individuals, despite having diverse experiences and taking different paths, ultimately reached common equifinal points.
The analysis revealed that during their student years, experiences such as "learning through the curriculum" and "teaching practicum" influenced their career choices. After becoming teachers, factors such as "direct interactions with students," "collaboration with Japanese teachers," and "transitioning to a stable living environment" played key roles in sustaining their careers. Additionally, through their teaching practice, they developed a professional value of "supporting each student’s growth while growing themselves," which was closely linked to the foundational standards of teacher education.
Furthermore, by reinterpreting responses from a follow-up survey of graduates using TEA, we gained deeper insights into the implicit meanings and intentions behind seemingly simple answers. This study demonstrated that combining quantitative and qualitative research methods enables a more comprehensive understanding of both the overall structure and the essence of individual career trajectories. | URL for researchmap | https://www.jstage.jst.go.jp/article/daiyoukyou/22/0/22_1/_article/-char/ja/

Development of the Intermediate Japanese Textbook Series “Task-Based Learning Japanese for College Students”:Application of TBLT (Task-Based Language Teaching) to Japanese Language Education ICU Studies in Japanese Language Education pp.3-22 (Collaboration) 2025/03 |
Language | Japanese | Publication Date | 2025/03 | Type | Research Paper (Bulletin of University/Institution) | Peer Review | With peer review | Title | Development of the Intermediate Japanese Textbook Series “Task-Based Learning Japanese for College Students”:Application of TBLT (Task-Based Language Teaching) to Japanese Language Education | Contribution Type | Joint Work | Journal | ICU Studies in Japanese Language Education | Publisher | International Christian University, Japanese Language Program | Volume, Issue, Pages | pp.3-22 | Total page number | 20 | Author and coauthor | Aki Shibukawa, Ai Nishino, Kyoko Fujimoto, Ikumi Ozawa, Kumiko Osaki, Yasuko Kanayama, Ibuki Aiba, Akiko Hagiwara | Details | The Japanese Language Program at International Christian University (JLP) commenced development of the “Task-Based Learning Japanese for College Students” series in 2018 and completed the series after approximately five years. This series reflects the principles of Task-Based Language Teaching (TBLT), aiming to cultivate the critical thinking skills essential for university and other academic settings and increase the language knowledge (sentence patterns, expressions, and kanji words) necessary to complete tasks. In developing the series, CEFR-based objectives were confirmed, and themes and tasks for each level were selected carefully. The process was carried out step-by-step; after the manuscript was completed, revisions were repeatedly made within each level and throughout the series to improve the content. Throughout the development of this series, the understanding of task-based language education among JLP teachers was deepened. It also provided an opportunity to reconsider the challenges of JLP and the needs of JLP learners, contributing to the growth of teachers in the program.

Language | Japanese | Publication Date | 2025 | Type | Research Paper (Bulletin of University/Institution) | Peer Review | With peer review | Title | Learning through Dialogue in TBLT Tasks: Development and Implementation of "Task-Based Learning Japanese for College Students Intermediate 1" | Contribution Type | Single Work | Journal | ICU Studies in Japanese Language Education | Publisher | International Christian University, Japanese Language Program | Volume, Issue, Pages | 21 | Authorship | Lead author | Author and coauthor | Ai Nishino | Details | The Japanese Language Program at International Christian University (ICU) has developed and published the "Task-Based Learning Japanese for College Students: Intermediate" series using a Task-Based Language Teaching (TBLT) approach. This paper focuses on the development process of "Intermediate 1" reviewing its creation process and presenting examples of course design and survey results. It also examines how learners aiming for the CEFR B1 level perceived this approach. The analysis revealed that the themes and tasks in "Intermediate 1" were both relevant and engaging for learners, contributing to the creation of a dialogic space in the classroom and enhancing learning outcomes. Furthermore, this TBLT approach demonstrated its potential to provide flexible instruction that not only aligns with a common syllabus and content but also accommodates the individual interests and needs of learners.

Insights from the Revision of Teacher Training System in Thailand: What Kind of Competency Should Secondary Japanese Language Teachers Possess? ICU Studies in Japanese Language Education 19,pp.3-20 (Single) 2023/03 |
Language | Japanese | Publication Date | 2023/03 | Type | Research Paper (Bulletin of University/Institution) | Peer Review | With peer review | Title | Insights from the Revision of Teacher Training System in Thailand: What Kind of Competency Should Secondary Japanese Language Teachers Possess? | Contribution Type | Single Work | Journal | ICU Studies in Japanese Language Education | Journal Type | Japan | Publisher | International Christian University, the Research Center for Japanese Language Education | Volume, Issue, Pages | 19,pp.3-20 | Authorship | Lead author | Author and coauthor | Ai Nishino | Details | The purpose of this study is to identify the goals and framework of the new teacher training system in Thailand and to investigate its effect on Japanese language teacher training. Research questions are as follows: 1. Are the needed competencies of “teachers as professionals” different from those in the past? 2. How will the quality be ensured? 3. How does the Japanese language teaching program respond to these changes? The findings of the survey showed the following points: 1. Competencies remained relatively the same, but the importance of practical training increased; 2. Through official licensing exams and degree certification, the same level of quality was guaranteed; 3. Although the time spent studying Japanese was reduced in the Japanese language teaching program, the emphasis was on training teachers as professionals. The results of this study are crucial for future collaboration and support between Thailand and Japan.

Task-based Language Teaching for Learner-Centered Education in Thailand (Khon Kaen University, International Demonstrasion School) |
Date | 2025/02/28 | Title | Task-based Language Teaching for Learner-Centered Education in Thailand | Promoters | Khon Kaen University, International Demonstration School | Country | Thailand | Location | Khon Kaen University, International Demonstrasion School | Conference Type | Other | Lecture Type | Lecturer | Contribution Type | Individual | Researchers and Co-Researchers | Ai Nishino | Details | As a visiting researcher at the Faculty of Education, Khon Kaen University, Thailand, I conducted a lecture and workshop for 40 teachers at the university’s affiliated school. Given Khon Kaen University’s role as the host institution for the 2023 TBLT International Conference, the session aligned well with ongoing discussions on innovative teaching approaches.
The lecture provided an overview of learner-centered education as promoted in Thailand’s secondary education and teacher training policies. It also introduced Task-Based Language Teaching (TBLT) as a practical approach to implementing learner-centered education in language teaching.
In the workshop, teachers actively explored how TBLT could be applied to the development of teaching materials, engaging in discussions on adapting its principles to their own classrooms.

Task-Based Language Teaching in Japanese: An Approach to Fostering Learner Autonomy (The Japan Foundation, Cairo) |
Date | 2025/01/25 | Title | Task-Based Language Teaching in Japanese: An Approach to Fostering Learner Autonomy | Conference | JLEMENA2025 Symposium on Japanese Language Education in the Middle East and North Africa | Promoters | The Japan Foundation, Cairo | Country | Egypt | Location | The Japan Foundation, Cairo | Holding period | 2025/01/05~2025/01/27 | Conference Type | International | Lecture Type | Keynote Speech | Contribution Type | Individual | Invited | Invited | Researchers and Co-Researchers | Ai Nishino | Details | With the increasing diversification of learners' backgrounds and objectives, coupled with advancements in technology, Japanese language teaching is now expected to foster learner autonomy and cultivate the ability to engage in self-directed learning. However, within instructional environments where traditional lecture-based teaching remains predominant, many educators may find it challenging to accommodate the individual learning goals of each student.
This keynote lecture critically examines the concept of learner-centered education by reassessing the role and characteristics of "learners" and exploring the pedagogical potential of Task-Based Language Teaching (TBLT) in Japanese language teaching. Specifically, it introduces the Task-Based Learning Japanese: Intermediate series, developed by the Japanese Language Program at International Christian University (ICU), and considers how educators can effectively facilitate learning experiences that align with the principles of TBLT.
Furthermore, the session includes a dedicated Q&A segment, providing an opportunity for participants to discuss specific challenges encountered in their instructional practices. Through this exchange, we aim to identify strategies for maximizing learners’ potential and advancing pedagogical approaches in Japanese language teaching.

A Lesson that Engages Learners' Individuality While Exploring Japanese Culture: Experiencing Lesson 3 from Task-Based Learning Japanese: Intermediate 1 (The Japan Foundation, Cairo) |
Date | 2025/01/24 | Title | A Lesson that Engages Learners' Individuality While Exploring Japanese Culture: Experiencing Lesson 3 from Task-Based Learning Japanese: Intermediate 1 | Conference | JLEMENA2025 Symposium on Japanese Language Education in the Middle East and North Africa | Promoters | The Japan Foundation, Cairo | Country | Egypt | Location | The Japan Foundation, Cairo | Holding period | 2025/01/05~2025/01/27 | Conference Type | International | Lecture Type | Lecturer | Contribution Type | Individual | Invited | Invited | Researchers and Co-Researchers | Ai Nishino | Details | This workshop set three main goals: (1) to understand the concept of Task-Based Language Teaching (TBLT), (2) to experience TBLT by engaging with Lesson 3 from Task-Based Learning Japanese: Intermediate 1 and learn about lesson structure and objectives, and (3) to reflect on the lesson experience and explore task-based teaching.
Participants showed enthusiasm and a strong desire to learn and implement this new approach. The theme of "folktales" proved to have great potential for adaptation and development across different cultural and regional contexts. Additionally, tasks such as discussing childhood extracurricular activities and creating stories fostered meaningful interactions among participants, making the session more than just a lesson experience. The value of conducting the workshop in person was evident, and feedback from the survey indicated that participants found the session highly meaningful.
