As a self-identified "native anthropologist" I am researching and publishing on Japan and the Japanese in English and Japanese, while critiquing the very concepts of "Japan" and "the Japanese". My major research themes are:1) The tea ceremony and gender after World War II (1998-);2) Migration behavior, world views, views on work, mental health and safety of young Japanese sojourners in Vancouver, Canada (2001-) and in Sydney, Australia (2011-);3) Critical analysis of representations of Japan and the Japanese (women) in research and mass media in English-speaking regions;4) Instructing Anthropology Field Trip course every other year, aiming at critical analysis of mainstream culture viewed from "periphery" or "cultural minorities". The past destinations include Canadian West Coast (First Nations), Hokkaido (Ainu people), Okinawa, Kyoto (Koreans), Osaka (Koreans) and Iwate.5)I am oranizing various students' and teachers' activities related to the affected areas of 2011 East Japan Earthquakes. |
