■ Profile
The advancement of science and technology is sometimes met with high societal expectations, while at other times it creates tensions with existing social values. I approach such phenomena as processes in which the relationship between science, technology, and society is constructed. I am particularly interested in identifying who is involved in these processes, what kinds of expectations and concerns are expressed, and how interactions with society influence the trajectory of of science and technology. In particular, I explore these questions through case studies of emerging life science technologies, such as genetic modification and genome editing. Key concepts in my research include trust, expectation, safety and security, the relationship between experts and citizens, and the societal acceptance of innovation.
